This 2013/2014 season marks the 60th anniversary of the club. Founded back in 1953, it has stood the test of time and maintained a continuous presence in the parish. We were eager to mark the anniversary with some events to showcase the club. Chairman Barry Boles organised the printing of special anniversary t-shirts for the club and there was an enthusiastic take up of these. There have been reports of T-shirts being snaffled by returning emigrants and we heard that Golden-Kilfeacle Gun-Club have a visible presence in London, Boston and the Czech Republic. Global dominance will surely follow!
At our recent AGM, the sitting committee were delighted to be re-elected. Barry Boles thanked those present for the honour and vowed to continue working to expand the club. For the third year running we saw our membership increase and we hope to see this trend continue. Vermin control numbers were also greatly improved and we were delighted to see some of our newer members having such an impact.
At the AGM, Secretary Robert O’Keeffe, commented that the position of club president had been allowed to lapse in recent years and asked that it be revived in our anniversary year. He proposed Mrs. Mary Boles for the position and this was unanimously and enthusiastically endorsed by the meeting. Mary and her husband Willie have been stalwart supporters of the club for many years. Over the past ten to fifteen years, Mary has sold raffle tickets for the club, organised spot prizes and helped out at every club event that we have held. Each year she has been the top seller of tickets for our development draw and her constant good nature has ensured that the public profile of the gun club has been raised immeasurably. We could have appointed no more fitting President for the club and we hope that she has a long and happy reign!
Last Saturday 6th September saw the club undertake an ambitious project- we wanted to run our own clay pigeon shoot as an anniversary celebration. William Boles put in trojan work, approaching a local landowner and getting us a venue for the shoot. He also approached other local landowners and obtained their consent. He contacted Ray Sampson of the Lazy Dog shooting grounds in Ballylanders who kindly agreed to provide us with traps for the day. Several club members met at the venue on Friday night to set up the traps, erect signs and to fence off the stands. Many thanks to Owen Jackman for his invaluable advice and help on the setting up of the shoot. The day of the shoot dawned and as luck would have it, it coincided with the end of the fine spell of weather. However, we didn’t allow it to dampen our spirits and around 25 members and friends showed up to shoot. We had two different stands offering a particularly challenging springing teal and a difficult cock and hen. The shooting was fierce and the slagging was fiercer with all members giving a relatively good showing. In between the clouds of gun smoke , people began to think they were hallucinating as there seemed to be a smell of cooked meat all around the field. Happily, this turned out not to be an illusion. Barry Boles and his wife Domenica had taken it upon themselves to provide a barbeque for the members. The members, never shy, were treated to tea, coffee, pork fillets, chicken wings, steaks and a fabulous apple and cheese salad. One of the members was heard to remark that home was never this good. It was the icing on the cake for what was a wonderful social occasion for the club. Many thanks to everyone who showed up and for all those who helped to organise it.

Clay shoot News
Last Saturday March 5th saw a large group of club members travel to the Lazy Dog Shooting grounds in Ballylanders, Co. Limerick for a clay pigeon shoot. The group first got a demonstration on safety and then were shown how to use the traps. We divided into groups of two and three and everyone had a turn at the various different traps. Ray Sampson, the manager of the shooting ground made himself available to each and every participant and offered tips on how to improve. After an hour and half, we were all invited up to the main shooting area where we took part in a skirmish. We were broken up into teams of three and had to fire at a constant stream of clays- results were mixed to say the least! Michael Doyle’s team came in first place, while Mick Delahunty proved himself to be a dead eye shot , doing a passable impersonation of Clint Eastwood and earning himself a trophy in the process. A fantastic day was topped off when we all returned to the Cornerstone pub for some much needed food and liquid refreshment. Huge enthusiasm was shown for the liquid refreshments in particular and there were a few tender heads to be seen at the pheasant release the following day. Thanks to all who came along and supported the club and a special word of thanks to Mick Delahunty for sponsoring the food. Thanks also to Ray Sampson for his help on the day. Anyone looking for a great day’s shooting can contact him at lazydogshooting@eircom.net or on 087-9079556.
